Abstract

The incidence and prevalence of constipation is difficult to determine, as the definitions of constipation vary and patients frequently self-medicate. It has been estimated that the prevalence of constipation is 16% in toddlers, 6% to 20% in adults, and up to 67% in institutionalized adults.1–3 The definition of constipation most commonly requires three or fewer stools per week associated with straining.
