Diseases of the pancreas cause significant morbidity and mortality in Western countries. In addition to caring for the acutely ill patient, family physicians can more successfully treat patients with pancreatic diseases by effective intervention in the patient’s life style and family issues. This intervention may disrupt a pattern of chronic alcohol abuse and provide supportive care for the family of the patient.
