Breast pain, also known as mastodynia, mastalgia, and mastopathy, is one of the most common complaints that women have related to their breasts. The pain can be cyclic, varying with the menstrual cycle, continuous, or begin as cyclic and then become continuous. Although there may be many reasons for the pain, it is usually secondary to hormonal variations or fibrocystic changes. Breast cancer rarely causes pain; in fact, several series have reported that only 5% of women with breast cancer present with pain as their sole symptom.
