Acute Abdomen

  • Keith W. Millikan

Abstract

An acute abdomen usually but not necessarily has a surgical cause, therefore a very thorough evaluation of the patient who presents with an acute abdomen is necessary. An acute abdomen by definition has pain as its primary manifestation. This pain is differentiated into three main categories: (1) visceral; (2) somatic; (3) referred.
