The development of oliguria is a concerning event. At the very least, it represents the earliest evidence of inadequate organ perfusion. In the extreme, it represents impending acute renal failure (ARF) and a worse prognosis. Survival is significantly reduced in surgical patients who develop ARF, and the mortality associated with respiratory failure is almost doubled in the presence of ARF.
