For the patient who presents with an emergency such as a perforated viscus or intra-abdominal hemorrhage, surgery must be undertaken without delay. Clearly, in these instances, there is insufficient time to proceed with a cardiac workup, however, invasive monitoring may help perioperative fluid management.
