Formation of Stars and Planetary Systems

Part of the Astronomy and Astrophysics Library book series (AAL)

The number of stars in the Milky Way may be as high as a hundred billion. Yet we have only the most incomplete notions of how all these stars formed. Within the past decade, we have also become aware of the many planetary systems orbiting all these stars. Yet we are only just beginning to understand how our own system of planets condensed. In this chapter we examine the formation of stars and planetary systems, establish the mechanisms that appear to be at work, and describe ways in which further insight may be gained.
