When we look back over the course of evolution of timekeeping methods, we are struck again by the relentlessly accelerating pace of technological change: From centuries of sundials and water clocks, tower clocks, and pendulums, until within our own century we have electronic timekeeping, first with quartz crystals, then with quantum-based atomic clocks. Within the span of the last twenty-five years we have come close to the ultimate timekeeping mechanism: the inner quantum beat of a single atom frozen in space. This, at least, is the ideal for timing events within the realm of human experience.
