Psychological and Psychiatric Consequences of Cocaine

  • Chapter
Handbook of Substance Abuse

Abstract

Systematic observations of abuse and abstinence patterns that refine conceptualizations of street cocaine abuse and dependence are rare and, unfortunately, practical and ethical design restrictions on systematic inpatient research render clinical generalization from such studies negligible. Thus, a significant proportion of the clinical research base and clinical consensus is gleaned from experiences with heterogeneous “street” samples.
