Now that every home already has its radio, television set, video recorder, personal computer, compact disc player and camcorder, digital mobile phones have become the electronic consumer product of the nineties. The evolution to digital cellular systems has had many consequences. New digital modulation schemes allow a very efficient use of the available spectrum bandwidth, and a large amount of digital signal processing guarantees an excellent speech quality in all conditions. A modern mobile terminal fits in your pocket, weighs less than 200 g, has several hours of talk time and several days of standby time. But most of all, prices have dropped to a level affordable for a large part of the population. The number of applications and subscribers is growing rapidly, and a lot of providers are competing for their share of the market.
