Stochastic Physiologically-Based Pollutokinetic Modelling

Abstract

Pollutokinetic analysis is used to predict biomarker distributions in the human organs and tissues (e.g., chemical concentration or metabolites; see Chapter II), resulting from exposure to pollutants. The term pollutokinetics is similar to the pharmacokinetics which is the study of the rate of change in drug and metabolite concentration in the body. The analysis of pollutokinetic data typically involves compartmental models (e.g., Piotrowski, 1971; Crawford-Brown, 1997), which are particularly useful in the study of transfer and transformation processes that occur in the body following exposure to a pollutant.
