Abstract

Historically, the organisational structure of the company has been based on a functional hierarchy based on the principles of mass production. Companies are formed of a number of hierarchical levels, and the organisation is clearly divided into separate departments such as sales and marketing, product design, process planning, purchasing, production, and after-sales service. These in turn are divided into specialised subfunctions. This structure is based on a strict division of labour and on a simple and restricted set of information flows (Rummler and Brache, 1990).
