Testing is an activity which aims at finding design errors and physical faults. Design errors are introduced by the designer during the product development process. The testing of design errors, sometimes called design verification, tries to find discrepancies between the design specification and the current implementation. Physical faults comprise fabrication errors, fabrication defects and physical failures [ABF90]. Fabrication errors and defects result from an imperfect manufacturing process. A functionally correct design can function incorrectly due to such faults. In this chapter, we will concentrate on hardware testing of production faults. The place of verification and product testing in a general product development flow is depicted in Figure 9.1.
