Abstract
The abuse of elderly persons is a syndrome that represents one extreme in the age spectrum of familial violence. Over the past decade, the issue of elder abuse and neglect has received increased attention in society. Pillemer and Finkelhor1 report 700,000 to 1.2 million annually, while the American Medical Association2 estimates between 1.5 and 2 million older individuals (persons older than 60 years of age) in this country are victims of elder mistreatment annually. In either case, the prevalence is daunting and immediate steps are necessary to curb this violence.
