Evolving Wireless LAN Industry — Products and Standards

Abstract

This paper provides an overview of the existing wideband wireless local communication industry. First the evolution of the wireless LAN industry from concept to product development is discussed. Then an overview of the existing and emerging standards and international activities in US, EC, and Japan is provided. An update and comparison of theexisting standards covers IEEE 802.11, HIPERLAN, and Wireless ATM. The activities in the US will cover WINForum and U-NII. The EC activities under ACTS/RACE all addressing WLAN services for the third generation wireless networks. The Japanese activities includes lower speed services for indoor/outdoor as well as high speed indoor applications perceived for the future of this industry in Japan.
