In this chapter we first give an overview of the MIMOLA hardware description language. Then, we briefly present the MSSQ tool, an earlier MIMOLA-based compiler operating on RTL structural models. Based on two application studies with real-life processors, we analyze strengths and weaknesses of the techniques used in MSSQ. The results of the application studies provide the motivation for the advanced processor modelling and code generation techniques in the remaining chapters.
