Abstract
In the previous chapters, we considered only phenomena which did not include any changes of the substances. Such changes can occur for two reasons. For one thing, the substances making up a body can undergo chemical reactions, leading to a new composition. Chemical reactions include changes of phase as well as the more obvious processes in which the molecular composition changes. Second, a body may change because substances are added or withdrawn. This is the case in transport processes, which are of two general types-the obvious bulk transport of matter, and the less visible phenomenon of diffusion.
