Abstract

The goal of this book is to introduce the field of information retrieval (IR), with emphasis on the health care domain. To many, the term IR implies retrieving information of any type from a computer. However, to those working in the field, it has a different and more specific meaning: the retrieval of information from textual databases. It is a field at the intersection of information science and computer science, which concerns itself with the indexing and retrieval of information from heterogeneous textual databases.
