Nutrition for Young Athletes

The nutritional demands of preparing for and participating in sport at the elite level have been extensively studied in recent years, and much information is now available on both the nutritional requirements and nutritional habits of top level performers in many different sports (Burke and Deakin, 1994). Most of this information, however, relates to the major locomotor sports, such as running, cycling and swimming, where performance is easily quantified, and also applies only to adult performers in these sports. In some sports, there is little available information, either on the nutritional demands of training and competing, although the world’s best performers in some of these sports are adolescents. Women’s gymnastics is a good example of a sport where the elite performers begin intensive training before puberty and reach their peak while still adolescent.
