Abstract
The cell biology of the immune and hematopoietic systems is incredibly rich in detail, involving the generation and interaction of a large number of different cell types. Our understanding of the details is incomplete, yet enough has already been seen to appreciate the wide range of the body’s repair and defense mechanisms. We know more about the biology of blood cells than we do about most other tissues in the body because of the ease with which we may sample them. Hematologists have had a major advantage in that the blood is so accessible for microscopic, and now, molecular examination.
