Abstract

This chapter outlines a number of the major changes affecting the healthcare industry, emphasizing those with substantial implications for information systems (IS). It then describes the benefits and challenges associated with adopting a formal IS strategic planning program within the healthcare enterprise, describes a proven process for developing IS strategic plans and of institutionalizing IS planning as a process, tied intimately with the evolution of enterprise business strategy and plans, rather than an episodic and isolated determination of computer technology needs.
