Abstract

Organizations are messy places! They are made up of people with widely varying personalities, values, and agendas. While most organizations have neat and tidy formal organization charts that clearly and logically indicate who reports to whom, the real or informal organization looks like a weather map with pressure lines and wind patterns simultaneously going in many directions. While it is the formal organization chart that typically sets the strategic direction, it is usually the “weather map” organization that ends up implementing that direction.
