Melanoma Markers

Abstract

Melanoma cells have a number of molecular components that may be recognized morphologically and immunologically. These structural and functional constituents are useful in studying the pathobiology of melanocytic neoplasms, as diagnostic markers in histopathology, and as biochemical tools for therapy. The characterization of numerous melanoma-associated antigens and cytogenetic abnormalities present in benign, atypical, and malignant melanocytes has provided insight into the possible multistep evolution of malignant melanoma. Antibodies to cellular proteins, including S-100 protein, HMB-45, and vimentin, are used in surgical pathology to help diagnose primary and metastatic melanomas. Antibodies to melanoma-associated antigens provide mechanisms for radiological imaging, radiotherapy, immunotherapy, and chemotherapy.
