Abstract

Advances in digital video technology and storage have made it possible to use digital video into a number of multimedia applications. In 1988, in response to a growing need for a common format for coding and storing digital video, ISO established the Moving Pictures Expert group (MPEG) with the mission to develop standards for the coded representation of moving pictures and associated audio information on digital storage media. MPEG, formally known as group ISO-IEC/JTC1 SC29/WG11, completed the first phase of its work in 1991 with the development of the ISO standard 11172, Coding of moving pictures and associated audio — for digital storage media at up to about 1.5 Mbit/s. This standard is also known as MPEG-1.
