Abstract

The correct business processes and organizational structure are necessary, but they are not sufficient. Just as the organization and its processes must be structured correctly, so the data must also be structured correctly. This structuring is the Data Architecture. Staff need data in the performance of their duties. Having the right data available at the right time allows the hospital to provide better service. It tightens the control cycles, smoothes transitions, and adds value to services by embedding information in them. The data must be structured both logically and physically. That is, one must know the definition of a Patient, and one must know how to relate the Patient data in the Registration files with the Patient data in the Laboratory system.
