“Business Architecture” refers to the way in which a hospital organizes itself to achieve its strategy. It includes departmental structure, job design, work flows, systems for rewarding and motivating employees, systems for defining and measuring standards of performance, and other organizational entities such as teams, committees, and advisory groups. While strategy is necessary, it is not sufficient; it requires sharp execution in order to succeed. This fact, until fairly recently, has been ignored by many industries, particularly by hospitals. After the strategy has been developed, it must be carried out by organizations and their components: work groups, policies, procedures, skills, work flows, and supporting technology.
