Psychophysiological Disorders

  • Chapter
Diagnostic Interviewing

Abstract

It is generally presumed that there are biological bases to the psychophysiological disorders and that stress, emotional, and behavioral habits contribute to the occurrence of the physical symptoms. This conceptualization is reflected in the most recent editions of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, DSM-III (American Psychiatric Association, 1980), DSM-III-R (American Psychiatric Association, 1987), and DSM-IV (American Psychiatric Association, 1994). Beginning with DSM-III, the diagnosis psychophysiological disorders was subsumed under Psychological Factors Affecting Medical Conditions. The types of somatic conditions that might be affected by stress or other environmental factors are quite diverse, including dermatological, cardiovascular, musculoskeletal, gastrointestinal, and central nervous system functioning (Ferguson & Taylor, 1981).
