Sisters in Sorrow
When the Lebanon war broke out on June 6, 1982, I had been with the IDF mental health department for about half a year. This department is part of the headquarters of the army’s surgeon general and is responsible for the provision and supervision of mental health services to all army personnel. It employs psychiatrists, psychologists, and social workers who work on bases and in clinics all over the country. The headquarters where I was located, on the Tel Hashomer base outside Tel Aviv, also houses the IDF central mental health clinic, one of whose units is an outpatient clinic specializing in the treatment of combat-related mental disorders.
