Abstract
The problems that couples face in an intimate relationship, especially marriage, are often the underlying reasons for patient visits in a primary care setting. It has been estimated, for example, that over one in ten visits involves a sexual problem (1). The primary care physician is in an excellent position to address a variety of marital difficulties by virtue of his or her relationship with a family over time. From premarital exams, to well-child visits, to acute illnesses, to the experience of loss, the physician has access to a couple throughout the life cycle and can be the one to whom a couple turns when facing problems in their relationship.
