Abstract

In the previous chapter, the membrane is described as a physically dynamic structure. In this chapter, the biological activity of membranes is emphasized. The biomembrane is not simply a passive structure whose function is to delineate and enclose aqueous compartments. A brief consideration of the kinds of enzymes which are membrane-bound will illustrate the extraordinary diversity of catalytic activities associated with membranes.
