Abstract

From August 1987 to December 1988, 1,544 patients with renal and ureteric stones were treated by extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy (ESWL*) with the EDAP LT-01 lithotripter at Affiliated First Hospital of Sun Yat-sen. There were 1,302 patients with renal stones (Group I), 186 patients with upper ureteral stones (Group II), ten patients with lower ureteral stones (Group III), and 56 patients with renal and ureteral stones (Group IV). The successful fragmentation rate was 98.5%, 88.1%, 80%, and 93%, respectively. At three months post treatment, the stone-free rates were: 98.3% in Group I, 100% in Group II, 100% in Group III, and 96.2% in Group IV. The post-treatment complications were pyrexia in 25 patients and stone street obstruction in one patient. Of these patients two successfully were treated by ureteroscopic retrieval, and five patients required ureterolithotomy.

In all, the results of therapy on these 1,544 patients were encouraging.
