Nephrotoxicity of Experimental Endotoxaemia in Rats
Endotoxaemia is frequently associated with acute renal failure (ARF) and continues to offer a very poor prognosis despite the recent progress in antibiotic therapy (1). During endotoxaemia an important release of vasoconstrictor and/or dilator hormones have been measured suggesting a that there is a hormonal role in this type of ARF (2). However, the understanding of this pathophysiology is very complex since the renal function is compromised by multifactorial effects such as pre-existing diseases (eg. diabetes, multiple myeloma, etc. ) the frequent administration of potential nephrotoxins (eg. aminoglycoside therapy) and/or prostaglandin inhibitors which all serve to complicate the assessment of renal function. Furthermore, systemic haemodynamic alterations can, per se, affect renal microcirculation.
