Quality Assurance by Knowledge-Based Techniques
Quality assurance (QA) in blood banking and transfusion services seems well established and the topic has been discussed in depth in a previous publication in this series . In order to provide and assure safe and effective transfusion therapy it was considered important to have “standardized procedures for every test and every service that the blood bank and/or transfusion service intends to provide to donors, patients and physicians”. In specifying such procedures it would be rational to start by defining the clinical needs of various tests, services and blood products, and then assessing the corresponding quality requirements accordingly as a basis for a QA-design (Fig. 1).
