The object of this chapter is to give an account of some of the distinctive aspects of stationary point processes on the line without falling back on the measure-theoretic foundations that are given in Chapters 6 and 7. Some aspects that are intuitively reasonable and that can in fact be given a rigorous basis are taken at face value, in order that the basic ideas may be exposed without the burden of too much mathematical detail. Thus, the results presented in this chapter may be regarded as being made logically complete when combined with the results of Chapters 6 and 7.
