Abstract

In his introductory remarks our Director Dr Knoepfel outlined the main issues he wished us to address, namely the plasma physics and technology. He also wished us to reach conclusions. Both Dr Sheffield and Dr Engelmann who gave admirable review papers, divided the tokamak current pulse into four main phases: the creation of plasma by initiation of a small current; the current ramp-up phase from about 100kA to the required level of 10 MA; the heating, possibly together with pellet fuelling, to ignition; and the flat-top ignition phase. In my report to you I shall follow these main phases, dealing with them in inverse order. First, let me make some general remarks.
