The asexual reproductive, brush-like structure of the genus Penicillium, known as the penicillus is the characteristic fruiting structure present in species of this genus. It provides the basis for the delimitation of the genus, permitting distinction between this and other hyphomycete genera, and is also the most satisfactory basis for interspecific taxonomy.
