The curved surface results of chapter 7 can be used to produce a complete description of an object’s shape when sufficient other constraint is provided. In this chapter, we lay the groundwork for applying shadow geometry to the class of shapes known as Generalized Cylinders, an important type of shapes for image understanding. This chapter presents a definition of the term Generalized Cylinder, and addresses the problems of specifying the points on surface of a Generalized Cylinder and deciding when an object has more than one representation as a Generalized Cylinder.
