Abstract
The problems of this chapter require no more apparatus than the stable age distribution expressed in terms of the birth rate b, the rate of increase r, and the probability l(x) of surviving from birth to age x. If these quantities are fixed over time the fraction of the population between age x and x + dx is be −rx l(x) dx, a proposition due to Euler (1760). The population is supposed closed to migration.
