Abstract

Dramatic reduction in mortality from cardiovascular disease has been achieved in some developed countries during the past 10 years. Many factors may play a role, such as improved medical services, advances in surgical and medical treatment, improved control of blood pressure, dietary change, and other alterations of life style (Levy and Moskowitz 1982). Certainly, research into the nature and causes of diseases in this classification has returned significant dividends. Yet in the United States, for example, coronary heart disease is still responsible for approximately one-third of the deaths from all causes in persons between the ages of 35 and 64. This provides motivation to further improve the understanding of cardiac function and develop more effective diagnostic techniques. Partly for this reason and partly because the magnetic field of the heart is relatively easy to observe, more effort has been devoted by biomagnetic research groups to studies of the heart than to any other organ.
