Abstract

Despite its name, a computer does not spend most of its time ‘computing’. The French have a better name — an ordinateur. It is so called because a computer spends much of its time manipulating information — all kinds of information. Consequently, the way in which the information is represented in a computer is very important. Consider some examples.
