Embrittlement and “Spontaneous” Cracking of a Hardened (α+β) Titanium Alloy during Aging

Abstract

In aging of small half-finished products of the titanium alloy (Ti-6A1-2.5Mo-2Fe-lCr-lMn) hardened in the upper limit of (α+ß) region, we have discovered a hitherto unknown phenomenon of “spontaneous” cracking of titanium alloys under no external load. The fracture occurs in the form of fine cracks, single or numerous, directed from the periphery to the center of the blank (Fig. 1).
