Abstract
We introduce the explicit units in the modular function field which form the basis of everything that follows. We assume that the reader is acquainted with the elementary theory of modular forms and functions, and especially with the groups of automorphisms, as described in Shimura [Sh] or Lang [L 5], Chapters 1 through 6.
