Time permitting, the physical examination must be thorough, including not only examination of the abdomen, but also of the patient as a whole. Complete examination is essential in excluding medical causes of acute abdomen; in addition, a complete physical examination may uncover concomitant medical disorders which significantly influence the preoperative preparation, the selection of operative procedure, and postoperative management.
