Abstract

As in other diseases, the classification of coccidioidomycosis is a method of describing the disease by grouping its various manifestations into special categories and patterns to give as complete a picture as possible of the history of the disease and its state in any patient at any time. It may be used to compare different series of cases, in research programs, and for statistical and record-keeping purposes. However, it must be dynamic and subject to change as new developments occur in pathogenesis, immunology and other host-organism relationships, treatments, and the use of vaccines which may alter the relative importance of established categories. As an infectious disease, it has a number of features in common with other granulomatous diseases.
