Sociolinguistic influences

  • John Downing

Abstract

Stubbs’s (1976) valuable survey of sociolinguistic studies in education makes the vital point that ‘it is important that educationalists can distinguish between the characteristics of language itself and the power of people’s stereotyped attitudes to language’. It is extremely important to remember Stubbs’s distinction in considering the effects that arise when the child’s language is different from the teacher’s language.
