Summary
This contribution is intended to give a brief introduction, for the non-specialist, into the early stages of gas breakdown at moderate temperatures. One of the techniques for the determination of discharge parameters will be described and some examples of data obtained by means of this technique at the University of Manchester, Institute of Science and Technology, are presented. Breakdown criteria which make use of such basic gas data will then be introduced and some classical illustrations will serve as evidence for the validity of models used. Measurements carried out in the High Voltage Laboratory of the Federal Institute of Technology at Zürich demonstrate the validity of the models and criteria previously mentioned over a wide range of conditions at elevated pressures in SF6.
Presented at the Symposium by T. H. Teich.
On leave from UMIST, Manchester.
