The previous chapter, in dealing with relatively simple jaw, facial, and tongue reflexes, has provided a basis upon which we can now consider more complex oral-facial functions. We cannot hope to cover all these functions because some (e.g., feeding behavior, speech) are books unto themselves. Most of this chapter will be devoted to the very complicated function of mastication. Swallowing and other complex reflexes such as gagging and coughing, and the reflex pathways to the pharyngeal and laryngeal muscles utilized in these activities will be covered in chapter 11.
