Abstract

This chapter contains a complete and formal discussion of the concept of type. This concept has its origins in mathematics and logical reasoning. It was introduced to help to remove ambiguities and to identify meaningless statements. In a programming language the concept of type allows the programmer to structure the data in terms of the problem to be solved rather than the computer to be used. In the context of Pascal it has several important consequences as follows.
