Abstract
A virus has been isolated from the marine bi-valve mollusc Tellina tennis with a disease of the digestive gland. The virus shows a strong morphological resemblance to the fish pathogen infectious pancreatic necrosis virus (IPN) but there is no cross-neutralization activity between the two. Fluorescent antibody tests, however, have revealed an antigenic relationship between Tellina virus and IPN virus. The Tellina virus which has a growth temperature optimum near 15°C is resistant to lipid solvents, is stable at pH 3, storage at −20°C in 50% glycerol, stable at −20°C and −70°C in the frozen state and has RNA as its nucleic acid. The isolated virus infects Tellina tennis and also the Japanese oyster (Crassostrea gigas).
