Malnutrition in Captive Birds of Prey

  • Chapter

Abstract

Malnutrition is a significant primary or contributing cause of disease in captive birds of prey. Artificial diets with no roughage contribute to decreased beak wear. Anorexia and starvation are rapidly debilitating and may be accompanied by hypocalcemic convulsions. Unsupplemented all-meat diets have been shown to cause vitamin A deficiency, rickets, osteomalacia, nutritional secondary hyperparathyroidism, hypocalcemic tetany and possibly nutritional myopathy. Syndromes similar to those caused by thiamine deficiency and riboflavin deficiency in domestic fowl have been described in birds of prey.
